About the City of Córdoba

Córdoba, the "City of Bells" – traditional college town, yet home to modernity. The city's colonial heart can be found among its streets and landscapes. Domes overlooking a past of faith and tradition reach up to the skies. The first shops open early in the morning; then, little by little, the pedestrian district is gradually populated by workers, passers-by, street performers, people going about their daily activities. Cafes open their doors, churches air their walls full of history, schools and colleges start to fill with students, banks and offices open for business followed, later, by shopping centers and malls. Thus Córdoba comes to life, each of us setting the city's heartbeat. Art, history, education, industry, tradition, its people's hospitality, humor, culture, sports... It is impossible to describe in just a few lines the quantity and quality of our city's offerings. With a history dating back to the founding days of the country, with imposing buildings that showcase the powers of politics and faith, this provincial capital is home to a myriad of attractions that deserve to be seen. The Jesuit Block, which in 2000 was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the architectural jewel that is the city's Cathedral with its remarkable combination of Baroque and Neoclassic elements; the artistic value of our churches, the colonial style Cabildo (the colonial government house)… These are but a few of the buildings where one can relive the rich past that gave birth to the city. Other notable sights include monuments and walks inherited from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, such as the Rivera Indarte Theatre, the Ferreyra Palace, the Fine Arts Museum, the Sarmiento Park, the San Martin and Paseo Sobremonte Squares. The beating of the most beautiful forms of art, science and culture can be felt in each cloister of the first University established in the Rio de la Plata, in each of Cordoba's galleries, theaters, libraries, and museums. The city's architecture combines both classical and modern styles, amalgamating adapted avant-garde elements with its own distinctive features. Everything happens in Córdoba, everything comes together to create an excellent alternative for those who enjoy art and culture. Córdoba's international airport is located just minutes away from the city center, providing an excellent point of entry to one of the Argentine capitals with the most varied hotel and gastronomic infrastructure, embodied in its typical dishes, its internationally renowned recipes, its convention centers and places of recreation. When night falls on its ancient walls and modern buildings, far from sinking into darkness, Córdoba lights up. Bars, restaurants, pubs, theaters, cinemas, and concerts set the pace for a multitude of cultural and recreational activities. For those seeking to switch from the vibrant pace of the city to a peaceful, quiet environment, nature and the mountains are but a few kilometers away. Founded on July 6, 1573 by the group of Spanish settlers led by Jerónimo Luis de Cabrera, the city continues to move forward. From its aboriginal roots to the current industrial city, a complex web of stories have shaped the feelings of Córdoba's inhabitants. To those who listen, the city's streets will voice the legends and stories of its people, their ghosts and memories, the combinations of beliefs and mysteries. These lights and shadows of history will take us back to other myths, those shared by our ancestors under the lights and shadows of their hearths.
